Stevia known as the ‘Sweet Herb’ is an edible herbal plant that has been used for more than 1,000 years and has been associated with several health benefits.

Unlike sucralose and aspartame, Stevia is a natural sweetener believed to have anti-cancer, cholesterol improving and weight loss promoting properties.

Research has also shown Stevia to have a low impact on blood sugar levels, making it a sought-after option for people managing diabetes.

Other benefits include:

  • improved gut microbiota
  • contains nutrients
  • anti-inflammatory effects
  • supports gut health

Sucralose on the other hand, is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. This means it’s derived from sugar and contains chlorine. Approved by the FDA in 1988 and introduced to the masses as a natural sugar substitute; sucralose is one of the more commonly used artificial sweeteners as it can be used in both fat and water-based products. Despite its growing popularity research has shown sucralose can negatively impact health in several ways.

Studies comparing the effects of Stevia, sugar and alternative sweeteners on food consumption, satiety and glucose/insulin levels have shown individuals didn’t feel hungry or overeat during their meals like they did when they consumed sucralose. Also, Stevia significantly reduced post meal glucose levels when compared to those who consumed sugar or aspartame. In other words, Stevia helps normalize blood sugar levels and reduce risk of diabetes compared to the blood sugar spike people experience when consuming artificial alternatives.

From metabolic syndrome to digestive problems and weight gain, reported side effects of Sucralose ingestion include:

  • increased risk of digestive problems
  • alters glucose and insulin levels
  • alters gut health and damages GI tract (body cant digest)
  • kills probiotics
  • potential to play a role in certain cancers
  • may generate toxic compounds when heated (cooking or baking)
